Linville Gorge

There is a scenic chasm off the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 316.4. The upper falls cascade 50 feet over rocks, disappear through a cleft in the moutainside, reappear as the lower falls and drop about 60 feet into Linville Gorge. Paths to the falls and lookouts have been cut through great jungles of rhododendron. Linville Gorge Wilderness, below the falls, is part of Pisgah National Forest and has been set aside for scientific and recreational use. Wiseman's View observation point on the west and Table Rock Lookout Tower on the east overlook the gorge. This area is reached by permit only. Free to the public.

Pisgah National Forest

The two main mountain chains and several lesser ranges encompassed by the forest have 20 6,000-foot peaks, including 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell, highest summit east of the Mississippi River. Part of the Appalachian Trail winds along the northwest boundary of the forest. Hwy 276, which runs for 37 miles between Brevard and Waynesville, is part of the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway and affords access to several points of interest.
